Water Lane Mural Project in Downtown Kingston Art District

Being lucky enough to be invited to look at the Water Lane Mural Project in Downtown Kingston, Jamaica. My friends Kadeem Petgrave and Simier Lansend of Educatours JA, an Edtech and adventure tour company, walked me around.

Downtown Kingston has a lot to offer to both local and tourist visitors. Kingston Creative is one organisation that will provide tours of Downtown Kingston highlighting the work and the message with the ultimate mission to help Kingston be the creative capital.

Unfortunately, Downtown Kingston is also known for its notorious districts. This makes people feel like it’s a place to pass through rather than stay a while. However, the Water Lane Mural project is trying to change that image, and the location is no accident.

Water Lane Mural Project is a collection of images showcasing what makes Jamaica special. Moreover, it reminds locals and tourists that Jamaica is not just about what you hear on the news.

With local businesses and initiatives investing in the local area, the hope is that Downtown Kingston will get the recognition it deserves.

A few of the murals I captured while walking around parts of Water Lane.

Murals creatively depict Jamaican culture through music or by enjoying themselves. Smiling faces in big, bold colours. Legends, as they should stand proud.

These were some, but not all, of the art you can see in the Water Lane Mural Project in Downtown Kingston.
